Double Awards Win For Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing, the West End smash of last summer came away from the WhatsOnStage Awards tonight with a pair of awards. The play won Best Shakespearean Production and was also named the AKA Theatre Event Of The Year.

The awards were collected by the play's director Josie Rourke who praised David Tennant and Catherine Tate for having the idea to stage the play in the first place, thanked the company for performing so well together and most of all thanked the audiences throughout the summer for their unwavering enthusiasm and support. She stressed the importance of having a good quality cast and felt that it was very apt that they had received the Theatre Event Of The Year award as that is how they were made to feel during the entire run.

Catherine Tate also sent a thank you message from LA where she is currently filming for The Office.

Unfortunately David Tennant, who had been nominated as Best Actor In A Play in a very hotly contended category lost out to James Corden, star of One Man, Two Guvnors. Josie Rourke herself lost in the Best Director category to Danny Boyle, who won for his production of Frankenstein.

There was good news for David Tennant's Much Ado co-star, Catherine Tate, though, who picked up a win as Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her role in Season's Greetings at the National Theatre.

The awards were hosted by Jenny Eclair, Sheridan Smith and Alan Davies from the Prince Of Wales Theatre and were streamed live on the WhatsOnStage website.
